2012 > 2011!
I went for a run yesterday (Memorial Day) and this morning. At face value, they were nothing notable (4 and 3 miles, respectively). However, just over one mile into my Memorial Day run, I accomplished something I’m very proud of: Surpassing my 2011 running mileage! Yep, just five months into 2012, I’ve already run more miles than all twelve months of 2011! I’ve still got...

Didn’t get out for that morning run with Matt yesterday — he had to cancel at the last moment. After that, I didn’t feel much like running in the humid morning solo, plus I was meeting a friend for lunch not too much later. Luckily, it rained in the evening, cooling things off a little bit, so I finally got out there. (It was still ridiculously hot & humid though.) Along...

So I didn't get out for that run on Thursday.
It was raining, and while I don’t mind running in the rain, I figured it was best not to do it when I’m just recovering from a cold. Instead, I did some serious foam rolling in the evening, so I at least did something productive. I wasn’t planning on a run today, but when I went to my gym for the Friday abdominals class, I found out it was cancelled for the week. I debated...

And so one rest day has turned into three.
I caught a cold from one of my roommates, so I’ve been out of commission for the last three days. Sure, I could’ve gone out for a run regardless, but I would have needed to bring a whole box of tissues with me. Going to try to get out there tomorrow morning, depending on how I feel. I need to run.

I’ve been lazy about updating the last week — but I haven’t been lazy about my running! Since being cleared to run on Tuesday, I’ve run four out of five days (and played kickball on that fifth day). So let’s recap: Wednesday Group run at The Eastside Running Company. This was the first run I’ve done there, but I can definitely see it becoming a weekly...

Cleared to run!
Yep, got to a doctor today - a chiropractor actually - but one that’s also in sports medicine. Not only did I get my shin splints examined and was cleared to start running again (woohoo!), but I also got my back and neck checked out, both of which have been really stiff lately. The doctor was super awesome too and explained how shin splints occur* as well as all the procedures he was...

I’ve realized that I have the bone variety of shin splints, so unfortunately no amount of stretching is going to help. It’s been suggested I get an MRI to understand the severity, so I guess I’d better see if I can make an appointment for Monday.

So I didn’t get up at 6. But I did get up at 6:30, good enough to get a short run in. Right from the start, I had some pain in the front inside portion of my right leg. The feeling mostly subsided shortly into the run, but it was unpleasant nonetheless. I’ve never had shin splints before, but I’m thinking I do now. Good thing I came across this Gizmodo article about getting...

Night run! It was humid. At least, more humid than it’s been all year. I normally don’t sweat much, but I was drenched by the time I finished. I never like to stray too far from the apartment when running at night for many obvious reasons. The problem is, I feel like I’m running the same streets over and over again, which drives me a little crazy. (Still way better than a...

I bought new socks today!
But not just any socks — injinji toesocks! See, my second and third toes on both feet interlock. They actually fit together like puzzle pieces. As a result, even with my toenails clipped as short as possible, the third toe was always cutting open the side of the second toe on 5+ mile runs. I don’t think I need to explain to anyone that bandaging my toe and washing bloody socks after...

2 Runs, 9.3 Miles
Yep, got out for two runs today! First was an early afternoon 5.7 mile solo run around Astoria. My legs were still feeling it from the 5K yesterday, so I had to keep my pace a little slower than I would have preferred, but it’s probably for the better. [RunKeeper] I got out for the second run with my friend Cory — just up to Astoria Park and back for 3.6 miles. This run we kept...

Morning Running
Today I was finally able to drag myself out of bed to go for a run before work! I’ve tried many times before, but me and 6am don’t really get along. This time the only thing that kept me from going right back asleep was knowing Matt and Allison would be waiting for me. It certainly helps to have friends I can run with now! We didn’t run too far — less than 3 miles, but...
