The Montauk Century was postponed to next week...
Which conflicts with the Brooklyn Half. Ugh. Why do you keep doing this to me Mother Nature?

My inaugural bicycle commute!
Here it is, there and back: I forgot to start my Garmin until a little ways into the way to work, and I had a doctor appointment after work with a ride that isn’t represented here, but overall I rode a bit over 12 miles today. Riding through Astoria to the Queensboro Bridge was very pleasant - there’s not nearly the volume of cars in Queens as there is in Manhattan. Getting up...

48 hours of Bike, Run, Climb, & Swim - A late...
Well, I had quite the weekend. Let’s jump right in. Bike Saturday was the penultimate Montauk Century training ride: 80 miles. Absolutely the best weather for a training ride yet - it was warm, but not too warm that we were sweating. Likely due to the gorgeous weather, we had a significant turnout of 24 riders. While we started out as a single group, it was soon clear we would be...

My swim class has been cancelled.
Not enough people signed up for JackRabbit to cover the pool rental. To top it off, of the six people who signed up, only half showed up for the second class this morning. It was great for the three of is who were there, since we got more individual attention from the instructor. But… How do you skip out on a class you just paid $200+ for?! My options now are to join the evening class...

I got to be sweep during today's training ride!
It’s not a terribly exciting job, but we split into two groups today and two of the regular sweeps had to drop out along the way, so I volunteered to do it. Considering all of the ride leads and sweeps in our group have had a few years’ experience with these rides, I was proud to take on the responsibility, even if just for 15 of our 80 miles.

Ran up to Astoria Park tonight.
Absolutely beautiful at twilight. I came back with a thin layer of pollen on my hands though. My seasonal allergies will be popping up any day now.

“Brightly colored clothing makes you run faster”
– Your daily dose of Mallory Science!  (via malloryrunsthis) Same rule apples to bike tires. At least, that’s what I told another rider in my training group when asked if there was anything special about my bike’s yellow tires.

Run for the Parks pre-race was pretty emotional
Everybody, and I mean everybody was wearing something Boston-related: Boston Marathon gear (quite a few from this year), “I run for Boston” back bibs, “I run for Boston” shirts, Boston sports team gear, or just blue & yellow clothing. I knew there would be a ton of runners showing their support, but it was still pretty astounding. Once in my corral, I looked toward...

Nobody wanted to do today’s training ride. The forecast called for rain, wind, and cold. Instead, we just got some wind and some fantastic riding! My dad (the ride leader) changed up the route, deciding to cut mileage and push the pace. So while we rode less than 55 miles after last week’s 70, we got it done fast. Even one of the riders who struggled all day last week was flying!

A year ago today, I had run all of two races: A 5K at MacArthur Airport that I was on the verge of hurling at the end of, and the 2011 NYRR Jingle Bell Jog. A year later? I’ve now run twenty races. In 2013 alone I’ve run: A 10K My first half marathon My first marathon My second half marathon Crazy.

paulsailer: Boston, We know we argue a lot (mostly about baseball), but we want you to know we really do love you. We’ve fought through some crazy, horrible, terrifying stuff too, and while the worst of it may finally be over, it’s going to be a long time before it gets better. But it will get better. Until then, we’re here for you, ready to help. You’re not in this alone. Sincerely,...

Run for the Parks packet pickup
Packet pickup at NYRR was a bit different today. First of all, in light of Boston, anyone that wants to use baggage drop at the race now needs to use a NYRR-supplied clear bag. I opted not to bother - I’ll just keep my MetroCard and keys in my SpiBelt. Second, no more D-tags! They’re now using super-slim, you-won’t-even-notice-it’s-there B-tags. Awesome. Third, I...

Hills
I don’t know if it’s the uber-light tri bike, that I’m the youngest in the training group, or that I might actually be good at them, but I fly past everyone on the hills and I love it.

Had my first real fall on the bike this weekend - as our group was coming to a stop, I unclipped my right foot and started to maneuver toward the left of the group. Then a strong crosswind blew, knocking me off-balance and sending me teetering over. I couldn’t even process the thought of unclipping my left foot as I fell, and ended up scraping my knee. Fortunately, the Under Armour...

“I was angry, so I went for a run. And things got better. I was confused, so I...”
– -Mark Remy, Runners World http://www.runnersworld.com/fun/so-i-went-run (via rtpforgotr) It’s something that’s ALWAYS there for me. (via rungillrun) Tonight I started wondering what the hell I’m doing with my life, so I went for a run. And things got better.

Today I signed up as an Aid Station volunteer for the New York City Triathlon, which means I’ll have a guaranteed entry into next year’s race. I guess I’d better start training? (Can someone please teach me how to dive?)

Halfway there!
This weekend’s century training ride got us up to 50 miles - just another 50 to the complete century! I couldn’t have asked for a much better ride. After the previous wet and windy rides, we finally got a calm, warm spring day. We had a small turnout, allowing us to ride as a single group (we usually have to split into two). I’m not sure if it was because it was a holiday...

Today I learned that April is NYRR’s “Volunteer Appreciation Month”! Earlier this week I signed up as a course marshal for their Women’s Half on 4/16 to get my +1 of the 9+1 for the 2014 NYC Marathon and because I enjoy doing it. But now I get the added bonuses of a free tech tee and entry into a select race (Queens 10K, here I come!). I highly encourage volunteering at...

Want to buy a bike?
I’m selling my current city bike on Craigslist - I just don’t have the room for it, and am looking to get a folding bike instead. It’s a pretty sweet vintage Sears Free Spirit 3-Speed. If you or someone you know is interested, let me know! (I’m located in Astoria)

Running With Crohn's: littleitalianrunner: Easiest... →
runningwithcrohns: littleitalianrunner: Easiest way to differentiate between passionate runners and people that run for show: Are they wearing nike frees? My two cents: I think Nike Frees get a bad reputation among more experienced runners because many beginner runners usually buy them solely based on how they look and their popularity. However, these new runners probably don’t know that...

I figured out what I need Google Glass for during today’s ride: A heads-up bike computer display. Every time I looked down I worried I was going to end up in a pothole or crashing into the rider in front of me.

Super Windy Ride
Or as my dad put it, “Great resistance training!” Getting out on a bike again has been amazing. I don’t enjoy it quite as much as running, but it’s a lot easier to go out for hours and there’s the opportunity to see a lot more. I saw areas of Long Island today I never knew existed - and I lived out there for over 18 years. I feel like I finally got the hang of...

NYC Half '13
Wow. Wow wow wow. What an experience. Running down the middle of 7th Avenue, through Times Square, and down the West Side Highway with not a car in sight, but crowds of cheering people? Everyone needs to run this race. Despite a tight hamstring and staying up til 2am the night before watching over a very drunk friend puking into toilet bowl, I managed to complete my second half marathon with...
